Connect Echo Dot to WVU's Wi-Fi

Your Echo Dot requires an active Wi-Fi connection to speak, process your commands and stream media.

How to connect your Echo Dot

Before you begin, plug your Echo Dot into a power outlet and open the Alexa app. Please note that Echo Dot does not connect to ad hoc (or peer-to-peer) networks.

  1. In the Alexa app, open the left navigation panel and select Settings.

  2. Select your device then select Update Wi-Fi. If you're adding a new device to your account, select Set up a new device instead.

  3. On your Echo device, press and hold the Action button for five seconds. The light ring will change to orange and your mobile device will connect to your Echo device. A list of available Wi-Fi networks appear in the app. The Alexa app may ask you to manually connect your device to your Echo device through your Wi-Fi settings. If you're unable to connect using the Alexa app, you may need to log into alexa.amazon.com on a computer to get the MAC address.

  4. Before completing setup and selecting a network, you'll need to add your Echo Dot to your WVU Boldyn (formerly Apogee) account. You can find the MAC address listed at the very bottom of the About section.

    • Enter the MAC address in Boldyn (formerly Apogee)

      1. Go to wvu.apogee.us.

      2. Click Add a Device.

      3. Select Echo Dot from the device drop-down menu, name your device, and enter the MAC address.

      4. Click Add Device.

  5. In the Alexa app, select the appropriate network for your location.

  6. Select Connect. After your device connects to your Wi-Fi network a confirmation message will appear in the app. You're now ready to use Alexa.

Any additional smart devices that connect to Amazon Echo Dot will need their MAC address entered into Boldyn. Most devices will require its own app to connect to Amazon Echo Dot. If you are still having trouble connecting, check out Amazon's Echo Dot support articles.

Please keep in mind that some devices may pose a risk for being disruptive or hazardous and may not be allowed in dorm rooms or apartments. Additionally, any devices that capture visual or audio recordings may pose a violation if used in an exploitative manner.
