Fix a blank computer screen

For desktop computers

  • Make sure the monitor is plugged in and turned on.

  • If the monitor is on a power strip, make sure the power strip is on.

  • Try moving the monitor's plug to another plug on the power strip.

  • Restart the computer.

For laptop computers

  • Press the FN (Function) and F8 keys simultaneously to make sure the laptop is not set to view from an external device like a projector or external monitor.

  • If you're using a docking station, restart the laptop and ensure it is properly docked, if you have issues pairing your devices to the docking station see the section below for instructions on how to restart the docking station.

  • Restart the computer.

Restart docking station

  1. Unplug the docking station from the power source.

  2. Hold the power button down for 30 seconds.

  3. Reconnect to the power source.

  4. The docking station should redetect devices plugged into it.

Fix a CD-ROM Drive

  • If nothing happens when you put a CD in your CD-ROM drive, eject the disc and then reinsert it. If this does not work, restart your computer.

  • If a CD is stuck in the CD-ROM drive, select Computer from the Start menu, right-click the CD-ROM drive and click Eject

Fix a computer mouse

The mouse is not responding

  • Check that the mouse is plugged in at the back of the computer.

  • Try cleaning the mouse ball or sensor.

  • Make sure the mouse pad is clean.

Fix a keyboard

  • Check the keyboard plug at the back of the computer. Unplug the keyboard and plug it back in.

  • Plug the keyboard into a different port.

  • Restart the computer.

  • Shutdown the computer and try a different keyboard.

  • Check for something laying on part of the keyboard (for example, a corner of a book).

  • Tap the Shift keys, Ctrl keys, and Alt keys several times (separately).

  • Restart the computer.

Fix a projector

If your computer or laptop is connected to an overhead projector, but the projector does not display what's on the computer screen, try the following:

  • Confirm the lens cover has been removed from the projector.

  • On the computer or laptop press the Fn and F8 keys to switch the output to the projector.

Fix sound or speaker issues
