Setting Up a New Computer for ITS Customers

WVU recommended computers ordered from the Dell Premier page will be directly delivered from Mountaineer Marketplace. Customers are able to log into these computers using their WVU email address and password, and the computer configuration will begin automatically.

Autopilot

Autopilot is a Windows feature that allows the configuration of a new Dell laptop to be done automatically without ITS imaging. Follow these steps to set up a new computer:

  1. Unbox the laptop, connect it to the power supply and press the Power button.

  2. Connect to a wired or wireless network.

  3. Sign in with your WVU email address and password. (username@mail.wvu.edu

  4. Autopilot will configure the device. This process takes around 20 minutes depending on the user's network speed.

  5. After all of the mandatory apps are installed, you will be logged into the computer and made an administrator. The primary browsers will be installed but may not appear for up to 10 minutes.

Note:  Additional applications can be found and installed by using Company Portal.

Setting Up Macs

Please follow these steps to sign into your Apple device for the first time:

  1. Remove your Apple device from the box and remove all plastic it may be wrapped in.

  2. Turn the device on and follow the on screen prompts until you see the Remote Management Acknowledgment page.

  3. Enter your WVU Login credentials and proceed.

Once you have completed this initial setup procedure, your computer will connect with our servers and begin to download our standard software packages. Within an hour you should see the following applications start to appear in your applications folder: Sophos, NoMAD, Microsoft Office, and Self Service.

If anything is missing after an hour or if you need additional software, please log in to the Self Service application to find the software you need.

Azure on Laptops and Desktops

All newly purchased desktops will need to go to Outbound Support for imaging and setup. If your desktop is being used as a permanent work at-home device, you would need to have Azure AD installed. In this case, the desktop would need to be taken to Outbound Support to configure the device for setup.

All laptops should be on Azure. If you have purchased a new WVU recommended laptop from the Mountaineer Marketplace Dell Store you can set your laptop up on your own by signing in with your WVU email.

Installing Network Printers

  1. Click Start or press the Windows key

  2. Type 'Install Printers' and click on the Install Printers shortcut.

  3. Find and double-click the printer you wish to install.

  4. If your department requires a copier code, you will need to apply the code before you are able to print. View the Set Up a Printer Code article for instructions.

Note: If the printer does not install you may not have permission to install the printer. Contact the ITS Service Desk to ensure you have permission to use the requested printer.

Mapping Network Drives

If the laptop is on the WVU network or connected to VPN, double-click the desktop shortcut called Map N Drive to automatically map and open your N drive.
