Java Licensing Changes

Oracle is changing its licensing model for Java, and certain versions will not be free to use. ITS is reviewing its use of Java in centrally managed systems and applications. Any college or department that owns or manages servers/applications that use Java will need to assess their use and determine their individual licensing needs. All University IT units should be prepared for the possibility of a future audit by Oracle by conducting an inventory and assessment as soon as possible.

Licensing will be required for:

  • Java 6 update 46 and newer

  • Java 7 update 81 and newer

  • Java 8 update 203 and newer

  • Java 11 and newer

Servers licenses are required for any third-party, non-Oracle applications running the non-public versions of Java unless they are used in the development and test environments, or in an educational classroom setting, such as teaching how to code in Java. Licenses are also required in DR (disaster recovery) environments with non-public versions of Java installed.

Oracle has provided a public pricing list and an FAQ about these changes.
