Install Microsoft 365 for Mac on Personally-Owned Computers

Current WVU students, current employees and emeritus employees can download Microsoft 365 for their personally-owned computers through the University's Microsoft 365 license. The software can be installed on five computers and five mobile devices. When a student or employee leaves WVU, the software will cease to function, and a license purchase will be necessary. This is also the case for non-emeritus retirees.

Please be sure you have claimed your Login account prior to attempting to install Microsoft ProPlus. Students must also complete New Student Orientation (NSO) and register for classes prior to installation.

Directions

  1. Go to office.com and click Sign in.

  2. Enter your WVU email then click Next. You’ll be prompted to enter your WVU Login credentials and authenticate with Duo.

Although WVU student email addresses end in @mix.wvu.edu, students should use @mail.wvu.edu for installation. This is a special username for activating your license, and is not an email address that can be used elsewhere.

  1. Click Install now to view and choose an installation option:

    • Microsoft 365 apps: This option will begin downloading a .pkg file to install the latest version of Microsoft 365.

    • Other install options: This option will take you to your profile to view your personal info, subscriptions, security settings, and view and manage installations. Click View apps & devices to view and manage any devices you've installed Microsoft 365 on or install Microsoft 365 on your computer. System requirements for installing Microsoft 365 can be found on this Microsoft support page

Note: If you do not have the option to install Microsoft 365, it may be possible that your account is not licensed for it. If you believe this to be in error, please contact the ITS Service Desk for assistance.

  1. When the download is finished, open the .pkg and follow the prompts to install the software.

  2. You will be prompted to enter your WVU Login credentials when you first log into Microsoft 365. If you are prompted with a Stay signed in to all apps dialog box, uncheck the Allow my organization to manage my device option and click No, sign in to this app only.

During the installation process, or when you first run a Microsoft 365 application, you may be prompted to enter an email address and a password. Enter your WVU Login username followed by your domain (@mail.wvu.edu or @hsc.wvu.edu) when asked for an email address and use your Login password for the password. Click Sign in or Activate, depending on your version.

Troubleshooting

If you are able to install the software, but the system is not allowing you to authenticate, try rebooting and reinstalling Microsoft ProPlus. View the Uninstall Office for Mac Microsoft support article to learn more about the process.

If you receive a Microsoft 365 error saying your account doesn’t allow editing on a Mac computer, view the Microsoft 365 Error Prevents Editing on Mac page for instructions to remove your Microsoft 365 license then reinstall WVU’s license.
