Microsoft 365 Modern Authentication Security Update

Modern authentication is a secure way to sign in and access your Microsoft 365 account. The Microsoft 365 desktop client, web apps, and mobile apps use modern authentication and are recommended by ITS to ensure a secure connection.

Basic authentication is sometimes used by other apps to connect to your Microsoft 365 account, like mobile phone email apps, and is a less secure method to access data. Microsoft disabled all basic authentication connections on October 1, 2022. 

Safe ways to access your Microsoft 365 account: 

You can access your Microsoft 365 apps online at office365.wvu.edu or use these supported Microsoft clients and apps: 

  • Outlook 2013 or later

  • Outlook 2016 for Mac or later

  • Outlook for iOS and Android

  • Mail for iOS 11.3.1 or later

Note: Exchange ActiveSync is no longer supported.

To ensure you're using modern authentication to access your email, you may need to remove your account from your device and then re-add it.
