Connect Your Android Device to Outlook
Microsoft 365 Mobility allows synchronization of compatible Android devices. The directions on this page show how to configure these types of devices. Due to variation in manufacturers, models and versions of the Android operating system, some menu options may differ from these directions. Visit Microsoft's support page for more information.
Because of the wide variety of mobile devices and email clients, and the way people configure and use them, ITS cannot test for every situation. ITS does not support email/calendar clients or “native” apps, meaning those automatically installed by a mobile device manufacturer. The recommended way to access University email/calendar is either through a locally installed copy of Outlook/Outlook Mobile or by accessing Outlook on the Web.
Before you begin
A Mobile Device Mailbox Policy is used on Exchange-based email systems like Microsoft 365. This policy applies to all devices that connect using ActiveSync. Currently, WVU has not modified the policy from the default configuration. You can read about the mailbox policy on the Microsoft Mobile Device Mailbox Policies page. By accessing your WVU email account using ActiveSync, you are agreeing to the Mobile Device Mailbox Policy.
Connect your Android device
Select Email (or Mail) on the Applications menu.
Enter your WVU Login credentials, then tap Next.
Select whichever of the following options is available on your device:
Exchange account
Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync
Corporate
Choose either step below based on what is shown on your screen:
If you see separate Domain and Username (or Identity) spaces:
Domain: LoginUsername@mail.wvu.edu OR LoginUsername@retiree.wvu.edu
Username or Identity: Enter your WVU Login username.
If you see a combined space for Domain\Username:
Domain\Username: http://wvu.edu \ LoginUsername@mail.wvu.edu OR
http://wvu.edu \ LoginUsername@retiree.wvu.edu
Enter the following information and then tap Next:
Password: Enter your WVU Login password.
Exchange Server: outlook.office365.com
Note: If presented with a "Remote Security Administration" message, review the included wording and tap OK to accept and continue.
Choose your preferences on the Account Options screen and press Next. Options some models provide include the following:
Email checking frequency: Users with metered data plans should carefully consider this option.
Amount to synchronize: Maximum age of email to be kept on your device.
Notify me when email arrives: Notifies you when new email messages are received.
Sync contacts from this account: Synchronizes contacts between your device and your account.
Sync SMS: We suggest not including this option as your text messages can wind up in your WVU email account.
Provide a name for this account, such as Microsoft 365.
Select Done.
Visit the Notifications area on your device and look for an "Update security settings" message that includes "Activate device administrator." If you have this, review the contents and tap Activate.
You may need to wait up to 15 minutes after setting up your account for the device to begin to synchronize. If your device is not authenticating, please ensure you have the "SSL" option selected.
Troubleshooting
If you find that your device will not complete the configuration, please try the following:
Completely power down your device, restart it and try the directions again.
Use your device's browser to attempt to connect to Outlook Web App.
If you are unable to see the Outlook Web App site prompting for your credentials, your device may not presently have a functional data connection. If that is the case, please attempt this again from a location with a good data connection, or contact your cellular carrier for assistance with your data connection.
If you are able to see the Outlook Web App site asking you for your Login credentials, provide them and attempt to log in. If you are unable to log in, the problem may be with your account itself. In that case, please contact the IT Service Desk for assistance with your account.
Temporarily disable cellular data on your device and connect to Wi-Fi. If you are on campus, please connect to the WVU.Encrypted network. After connecting to a strong Wi-Fi signal, please go through the set up directions again. We have seen cases where a cellular data connection may not be able to make the initial connection to the Microsoft 365 system, but being on Wi-Fi exclusively may help complete the process. Be sure to turn your cellular data back on!
If you are still unable to get your device to connect, please contact the IT Service Desk, or access Outlook by installing the Outlook app or by using the Outlook Web App.
