IACUC FAQ

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) module allows WVU+kc users to create, track, review and approve animal research protocols.

What are the main advantages of the new system?

This is an online, web-based submission process, which is replacing the current Word application. It will be more efficient and easier to use.

When is it available?

We anticipate the system will be available to a pilot group at the end of August and to all University researchers sometime in October.

Where do I get to it?

There will be a link on the WVU+kc dashboard and on the Office of Animal Welfare website.

Where can I learn more about it?

View the IACUC Protocol Module articles for more information. The Office of Animal Welfare will also announce online demonstrations, so please monitor your email.

Do I need training to use it?

We recommend you review the training materials. After the module is launched, you can contact the Office of Animal Welfare if you have questions.

How many questions are on the new form?

The new system uses progressive display, meaning the way you answer one question will determine whether another one opens. That means there is no set number of questions to answer; each project is unique.

On the forms, which questions/topics are new?

There are some new, gated questions tailored to the type of research on the protocol. For example, there are questions specific to those conducting wildlife research and those working with tumor models. And in general, questions that were part of the old form have been reworded to be more inclusive of different types of research and teaching.

Why are the new questions important?

Asking more specific questions ensures the PI is providing all the information needed for compliance and regulatory oversight of the specific type of animal work they are conducting. This will make the protocol review process more efficient.

Can I keep doing my protocols the way I do now?

The current protocol system will be gradually phased out. The first use of Kuali will involve primarily new protocol submissions. The Office of Animal Welfare will work with investigators to transition renewals and amendments to the new system on a case-by-case basis.

Do all PI have to convert their existing protocols now?

Not at the moment, but you may be asked to convert your protocol to the new system upon renewal. More information on this will be provided later.

Is there a deadline to have all protocols in Kuali?

Currently there is no deadline for having all animal research protocols entered into Kuali.

Who can help me in converting these protocols?

The Office of Animal Welfare will support researchers with the transition of their protocol into the new system.
