Parent/Guest Portal FAQ for Students

The Parent/Guest Portal is an online system that lets you grant Proxy access and share your University records with parents or other third-party guests. These records include financial aid details, grades, and class schedules and are considered protected information under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Unless you grant Proxy access to a parent or other guest, they will be unable to view this information.

What is the STAR Parent/Guest Portal?

The Parent/Guest Portal is an online system that your parent or other Proxy holder can access using an account you have created for them.

After the upgrade on May 20, 2024, how do I re-authorize my parent/guest access?

After this upgrade, you must re-authorize your current parent/guest access. Log in to the WVU Portal, click the link to manage proxies in the Parent/Guest Portal section, click the Edit icon underneath the parent’s name, then check the specific authorization(s) you want to enable. Click Submit. Your parent/guest will receive an email notification of the change.

With this account, what information can my parent/guest see?

That’s up to you. When you create an account for a parent or other Proxy holder, you can authorize them to view some or all of your information in STAR, such as account/billing information, financial aid details, grades, and course schedules.

How many parent/guest (proxy) accounts can I create?

You can create as many accounts as necessary.

How do I set up this account?

You will first log in to STAR and then click the Parent/Guest Portal link. Step-by-step instructions are located here.

What is the purpose of the "Passphrase" that I can set up?

A parent or guest Proxy holder must provide a passphrase if they want to discuss your records by phone or email with a WVU department such as Financial Aid. Without providing the passphrase, WVU employees cannot discuss your records with your proxy holders. An example of a passphrase is “My dog’s name is Rover.”

How will my parent/guest know how to get in to the Parent/Guest portal?

Your parent/guest will receive emails with instructions and a temporary password. Instructions are also located here.

My parent/guest lost the “New proxy identity” email message with the link to activate their account? What can I do?

You can resend the email. Log in to STAR, click the Parent/Guest portal link, and click the Edit icon underneath the parent’s name. Select the Communication tab. Locate the “New proxy identity” email in the list and click the Resend link.

What if I used an incorrect email address when creating the parent/guest (proxy) account?

Log in to STAR, click the Parent/Guest portal link, and click the trash can icon underneath the parent' name with the incorrect email address. You can then set up a new Parent/Guest account with the correct email address.

My parent/guest set up the account but forgot the password. Can I reset it?

Either you or your parent/guest can reset the password.

  • You can reset it by logging in to STAR, clicking the Parent/Guest portal link, clicking the Edit icon underneath the parent’s name, and then clicking the Reset Password link at the top of any of the tabs.

  • Your parent/guest can reset it by clicking the Forgot Password link on the Sign In page.

When setting up the parent/guest account, what are the Start and Stop Dates?

These dates determine when a parent/guest account is active. By default, the range is for six years, but you can change either date. If the Start Date is in the future or the Stop Date is in the past, the account is inactive, and the parent/guest cannot view your information.

Can I delete a parent/guest proxy account?

Yes. FERPA allows you to change or revoke Proxy access permission at any time. Log in to STAR, click the Parent/Guest portal link, and click the trash can icon underneath the parent’s name to delete an account.

Can I disable access to just a particular authorization?

Yes. Log in to STAR, click the parent/guest portal link, click the Edit icon underneath the parent’s name, then uncheck the specific authorization you want to disable. Click Submit. Your parent/guest will receive an email notification of the change.

I set up the account, but on the Proxy Management page, I see the word “Inactive” under the parent/guest name. What does this mean?

“Inactive” means the parent/guest has not yet logged in using the ink provided by email. After the parent/guest logs in and sets up a password, “Inactive” will no longer appear.

Can my parent/guest pay my bill using this account?

No. A parent/guest cannot change anything or pay a bill with Proxy access alone. You also will need to give your parent/guest a separate authorization through WVU MyAccount to pay a bill.

Will the financial information in the Parent/Guest portal be current?

Only after all transactions have posted. If the transactions are still pending, such as Financial Aid disbursements, the Parent/Guest portal will not have up-to-date information. WVU MyAccount will have complete information about pending transactions.

Who can I contact for assistance?

Submit a Parent - Guest Portal Support ticket or contact the ITS Service Desk for assistance.
