Sensitive Data includes Controlled Unclassified Information, Export-Controlled information, Social Security number, driver’s license number, visa/passport, credit card numbers, bank/loan account numbers, and biometric images. Visit the Protected Health Information Approved Technologies page if you are using Protected Health Information. All other Sensitive Data types that are being used for a research project should be protected as indicated on this page.
WVU defines the data is considers Sensitive Data within its Sensitive Data Policy. Sensitive Data is data that is required to be protected by state or federal laws. Collection of any of these types of data is considered High-Risk. Important things to consider when using Sensitive Data in a research project:
Personal devices may not be used by any research team member to conduct University activities that use Sensitive Data. The Sensitive Data Protection Standard strictly prohibits the use of personal devices to access or transmit Sensitive Data.

Applications/software (e.g., Skype, Box, Dropbox, Survey Monkey, and Wufoo) that have not been approved by the University should never be used to interact with patients/study participants. If a product is required for research and is not listed here, complete an IT Purchase Request. Review and approvals of such requests could cause delays. Please plan accordingly.
