Change Login Password (Public)

If your password is near expiration, you forget your password or need to change it for any reason, follow the instructions below. You will receive an automated email warning when your password is near expiration. Passwords for current students, faculty, and staff expire after one year. Former students' passwords expire every 180 days, and WVU Police employees' passwords expire every 90 days. 

You must complete a cybersecurity quiz when you change your password.

How do I change my password as a current employee or student?

  1. Go to login.wvu.edu and click Forgot or Change Password.
    Note: If you are new to WVU, you musClaim Your Login Account to create a password. You must provide a non-WVU email address and mobile phone number during the account claiming process or you won’t see all three verification options when managing your account. If you need to add or change your recovery contact information, go to login.wvu.edu.

  2. Enter your information and click Verify and start quiz. You must complete the cybersecurity quiz before creating a new password.

  3. Select one of the identity verification options to be sent a passcode either by text, voice message or email to your non-WVU phone number or email address. Click Continue.

    Note: You will not see all three verification options if you did not provide a non-WVU email address and mobile phone number during the account claiming process. If you want to add or change your recovery contacts, go to login.wvu.edu.

  4. Create a password that meets these requirements:

    • Be between 12-20 characters long.

    • Contain:

      • At least one uppercase letter: A-Z

      • At least one lowercase letter: a-z

      • At least one numeric character: 0-9

      • At least one special character

    • Must be different than your last 10 passwords.

    • Cannot have blank spaces.

    • Cannot contain three or more character segments of your name or Login username.

  5. Click Change password. You will receive an email to your WVU email address letting you know that your new password has been created successfully.

How do I change my password as a former student?

If you are a former student with no active roles at WVU, follow these steps to change your password.

  1. Go to login.wvu.edu and click the Change Alumni Account Password button.

  2. Enter your WVU username, birthdate, and WVUID number.

  3. Enter a new password that has a minimum of 12 characters. Include at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one number and one special character.

  4. Click Submit.

  5. If you entered your information correctly, you will see a message that says "Success."
