Parent/Guest Portal FAQ for Parents and Guests (Public)
The Parent/Guest Portal is an online system that lets WVU students grant Proxy permissions to parents and other third-party guests for access to certain records. This information includes financial aid details, grades, and class schedules. This data is considered protected information that must be maintained in a secure environment under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Until a student grants you Proxy access, you will be unable to view this information.

What will I be able to do after my student establishes an account for me in the Parent/Guest Portal?
Depending on what access your student has authorized, you can view some or all of their information in STAR, such as account/billing information, financial aid details, grades, and course schedules.
How will I get into my account after my student grants me access?
Instructions and a temporary password will be sent to the email address your student provides when setting up your account. The temporary password is good for 30 days. Instructions are also located here. After you follow the instructions in the email and change your password, you will log in at https://parent-guest.portal.wvu.edu.
I have forgotten my password. Can I reset it?
You can set up your password by clicking the Forgot Password link on the Sign In page. Your student can also reset it for you.
I lost the “New Proxy Identity” email message needed to activate my Parent/Guest Portal account. What can I do?
Your student can re-send the email by logging into STAR, clicking the Parent/Guest portal link, and clicking the Edit icon underneath your name. They should select the Communication tab, locate the “New proxy identity” email in the list, and click the Resend link.
I cannot log into the Parent/Guest Portal. Why?
Confirm with your student that he/she created an account for you
Confirm with your student that today’s date is within the Start and Stop Date range.
Confirm with your student that you are using the correct username (email address) to logon.
If you have forgotten your password, your student can reset it for you, or you can click the Forgot Password link on the Sign In page.
How do I change my password?
If you can log in to your account, click the arrow in the Proxy Personal Information region. Then select Click here to change your password in the upper right corner.
If you are unable to log in to your account, your student can reset it for you or you can do so by clicking the Forgot Password link on the Sign In page.
How do I change the email address that I use to log into the Parent/Guest Portal?
Log in to your account and click the arrow in the Proxy Personal Information region. Enter your new email address in the email address field. Click Submit. You will then receive three emails at the current (old) address and two emails at the new (requested) address.
Old (current) email address:
The first email sent to the old email address has the subject line Send Updated proxy profile Data and just alerts the parent/guest that a profile change was submitted by the parent/guest.
The second email has the subject line Cancel updated proxy email address and explains that a request was made to change the email address. This email contains a link to cancel the request.
The third email has the subject line New Proxy Confirmation and contains a temporary password to use when logging in the next time after cancelling the request. After logging in with the temporary password, you will be prompted to change your password.
New (requested) email address:
The first email sent to the new email address has the subject line New Proxy confirmation and contains a temporary password.
The second email has a subject line Confirm updated proxy e-mail address and contains a link to confirm the new email address. If the proxy is confirming the new email address, they can click the link from this email and enter the temporary password from the first email.
Will I have more than one set of login credentials if I have more than one student attending WVU?
No. Your account username is your email address. If more than one student authorizes you to access their information, you will see a tab for each student after logging into the Parent/Guest Portal.
I cannot see all my student’s information. Why?
You can see only the information (pages) that the student has authorized you to view. Under FERPA, your student can change or revoke the authorizations at any time.
Does access to the Parent/Guest portal enable me to speak with WVU departments?
No. To speak with or correspond by email with WVU departments, your student also needs to set up a Passphrase in the Proxy Management screen, then click a link to email the passphrase to you.
Does access to the Parent/Guest portal enable me to make any changes to the student’s information, or pay an electronic bill such as an academic deposit?
No. The Parent/Guest portal is only for viewing. You cannot make any changes here, or pay a bill. To pay a bill, your student must authorize you to do so in WVU MyAccount. You can find information about this and a link to WVU MyAccount at the top of your homepage after logging into the Parent/Guest Portal.
Is all financial information in the Parent/Guest portal current?
Only after all transactions have posted. If transactions are still pending, such as expected Financial Aid disbursements, the Parent/Guest portal will not have up-to-date information. WVU MyAccount will have complete information about pending transactions.
The Parent/Guest Portal is very slow when using the Safari web browser. What can I do?
This is a known issue. We recommend using Firefox or Chrome.
I am still having technical difficulties. Who do I contact?
You can request support by submitting a WVU IT request or call the ITS Service Desk at 304-293-4444.
