Automatic Weighting for SOLE Groups and Assignments

The Gradebook offers an option to evenly distribute weights across all assignments within an ungrouped Gradebook, among groups within a grouped Gradebook, and among individual assignments within those groups. This feature applies only to non-extra credit assignments included in grade calculations. The weight distribution precision follows the Gradebook’s decimal settings—for example, weights will automatically distribute to three decimal points if set in Gradebook.
Since not all numbers divide equally into 100%, minor adjustments may be necessary. For instance, if a group has three assignments weighted equally and the decimal precision is set to three decimal points, dividing 100% by three yields 33.333% per assignment, leaving a remainder of 0.001%.
For manual weighting, you can add the remainder to one of the assignments to reach a precise 100%. With automatic even weighting, the remainder applies automatically to the first assignment listed in the group, ordered alphabetically. For example, a group of six assignments, each weighted at 16.666%, leaves a 0.004% remainder, which can be added entirely to one assignment or split among multiple assignments, as long as the total weight reaches 100%.
When weights are set to automatically divide, any remainders are distributed from the top of the assignment list downward, each receiving 0.001% until a full 100% is achieved. In the six-assignment example, the first four would receive an extra 0.001%.
Once evenly distributed, the weights will adjust automatically if a new assignment or group is added or removed from the Gradebook or moved to another group. In this example, if Exam 6 were removed, the weights would recalculate based on five assignments rather than six.
Note: Each time a change is made—such as adding or deleting an assignment or group—the Gradebook automatically redistributes weights. You will need to confirm these new calculations by clicking ‘Save’ on the calculations settings screen each time a modification is made.
