SOLE Gradebook Environment
The Gradebook lists "Students" and their "Overall Grade" in columns on the left side of the screen. Students are automatically populated from the Users role in the Control Panel. These columns are locked so that scrolling to the right will keep the student names and overall grades visible, making it easier to see what grades belong to which student. You can sort these columns by clicking the title (e.g., “Student” or “Overall Grade”) to arrange them in alphabetical or numerical order.
Once assignments and/or groups are added, they can also be sorted by clicking their title. The width of the "Student" column can be adjusted by clicking and dragging the line between the "Student" and "Overall Grade" columns. This adjustment is saved per user. Additional columns for assignments and groups can be resized similarly by dragging the lines between column headers.
If the Gradebook is grouped, the green “Create” button allows you to add a new group. Individual assignments can be assigned to a group using the Group dropdown list in each assignment’s Gradebook settings. Please refer to the Help Pages for individual tools for more details on Gradebook settings. If the Gradebook is left ungrouped, any created or linked assignments will appear as columns to the right of the locked "Student" and "Overall Grade" columns.
Assignments display in columns with the assignment title at the top and student grades listed vertically. Ungraded assignments will show question marks in place of scores. Assignment columns can be reordered by dragging and dropping the title to a different position, which is saved per user. The “Sort” dropdown menu offers additional sorting options:
Alphabetically – Sorts in ascending order from left to right.
By creation date – Sorts by creation date in ascending order from left to right.
Custom – Allows custom ordering by dragging columns into place.
Below each assignment title, a label will indicate whether the assignment is fully graded or show the number of ungraded items. Once one or more grades have been entered for an assignment, a red bar appears below the title to indicate that grades are not yet released to students. This bar will turn green once grades are released.
Icons next to each student’s grade display feedback or notes added during grading. Student feedback comments appear as a blue icon, while private notes appear as a yellow icon. Hover over each icon to view the comment or note.
The gray button to the right of each assignment title provides options to manage the assignment:
Quick Grade – Allows quick entry of points for each student in the Gradebook assignment. You can also leave feedback comments for students, but cannot access the attached content. Quick Grade is unavailable for assignments graded by rubric and is only available for closed exams. If Small Groups are used, Quick Grade allows grading by group by checking the “Grade by Groups” box and then adding points for each group.
Detailed Grader – Opens the detailed grader for the attached assignment, journal, chat, or discussion. This feature is labeled “Exam Grader” for exams and links to the Exam Reports page for that exam. Refer to the Help Pages for detailed guidance on using the Detailed Grader.
Release – Publishes the grades to students.
Edit – Edits the assignment in the Gradebook, but does not modify the original assignment, exam, etc.
Delete – Deletes the assignment from the Gradebook without deleting the attached content.
Email Missing – Emails students who have not submitted the assignment. This option is only available when the Gradebook assignment is linked to a Journal or Assignment tool.
Reductions – This option can be applied through the Gradebook Settings under Grade Adjustments. Enabling final grade adjustments allows you to add or subtract percentage points from the final grade for individual students. Editing grade reduction settings will affect all Gradebook assignments attached to Assignment, Journal, and Discussion tools with a defined due date and allow for late submissions.
View Activity Log – A log displaying all activity related to the assignment, including changes, date, time, and user information.
Import Grades – Allows grades to be imported using a .csv or .txt document with the following required headers:
Email: Must match the email associated with students' SOLE accounts.
Score: Entered as points or percentage (selected via dropdown during import) with one entry per line. Scores below 0 and above 10,000 are ignored.
Score can also be represented with the following codes: “A” (Absent), “D” (Dropped), “E” (Excused), “I” (Incomplete), “L” (Late), “M” (Missing), “S” (Suspension), and “T” (Tardy).
Sample formats for .txt and .csv documents are available, and scores should be entered as whole numbers, not formatted as percentages.
Finalize Scores – Finalizes grades, assigning a zero to any ungraded assignments (marked by a ?) and leaving other scores unchanged. If an assignment is missed and not finalized, students are not penalized. Administrators must manually finalize scores. Scores assigned zero through this feature can still be adjusted using Quick Grader or Detailed Grader.
Assignment columns in the Gradebook are shaded in different colors to represent specific settings:
Green for Extra Credit assignments
Yellow for assignments with dropped scores
Gray for assignments excluded from the overall grade calculation
In a grouped Gradebook view, each group appears as a column with corresponding student grades. Group grades display the overall grade for that specific group, calculated according to the Gradebook settings. Each group title is listed at the top of the column with a label below indicating whether the group is fully graded or shows the number of ungraded items. Group columns can be reordered by dragging and dropping titles.
The gray dropdown button next to each group title provides options:
View – Shows the assignments within the group.
Edit – Edits group settings.
Release All – Releases all grades within the group.
Activity Log – Displays group activity logs.
Unrelease All – Retracts all released grades within the group if they were previously released.
Clicking View for a group opens it to display assignments within the group. A blue info icon next to each assignment title provides assignment information, such as maximum points, grading method, release status, and ungraded counts. If linked to content, assignment statistics, including mean, median, high and low scores, and standard deviation, are shown once grades are available.
Groups also have blue info icons, showing the total number of assignments within each group and how many are ungraded. If assignments within the group are linked to content, overall statistics for the group based on percentages (mean, median, high and low scores, and standard deviation) are also displayed.
The Filter Grades tool functions like a search bar, allowing you to find specific students and their grades quickly. Clicking a student's name opens their individual grade view, showing their overall grade and grades by group. The View as Student button enables you to preview how the student sees their grades. Feedback icons in this view allow you to review comments added during grading.
Click Return to Gradebook to go back to the main Gradebook view. If the Gradebook is grouped, you can switch between the Gradebook homepage and individual groups using the dropdown menu at the top left.
The Settings tab provides access to Gradebook setup or edits, while the Reports tab allows you to create various grade reports for printing or exporting as PDF or Excel files.
