How to Forward a Suspicious Email

If you receive a suspicious email that you believe could be a scam, use the instructions below to forward it as an attachment to the experts at DefendYourData@mail.wvu.edu. They will determine its legitimacy and assess potential security threats.

MIX (Gmail) Web App

  1. With the message open, click the drop-down menu on the right side and choose Show original.

  2. Right click and choose Select All.

  3. Right click and choose Copy.

  4. Paste the copied text into a new email.

​​Microsoft 365 Web App

  1. Click New to create a new message.

  2. At the upper right of the new message pane, click the Open in a Separate Window icon.

  3. Arrange your browser windows so that you can see the message list and the new message.

  4. Drag and drop the message that you want to forward from the message list into the body of the new message.

  5. You should now see an attachment icon for the message.

Mac OSX Mail Desktop App

  1. In the message list, right-click the message.

  2. Choose Forward as Attachment.

Outlook 2010/2013 for Windows Desktop App

  1. Double click the message to open it in a separate window.

  2. In the ribbon menu, click the More dropdown.

  3. Select Forward as Attachment.

  4. Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut CTRL+ALT+F.

Outlook 2011/2016 for Mac Desktop App

  1. In the message list, right-click the message.

  2. Click Forward Special.

  3. Select As Attachment.
