LiquidFiles FAQ
With LiquidFiles, WVU employees can immediately share files with anyone inside or outside the university using this simple system. It is an ideal solution for files containing sensitive data that cannot be sent through traditional email. Recipients receive email notifications of files being available and follow links to download them. If you have a question about LiquidFiles, start with the LiquidFiles FAQ below.
While WVU students can log into LiquidFiles, only employees are able to use LiquidFiles to send or receive files. Students should use Google Drive through their MIX Gmail account to manage large files.

What is LiquidFiles?
LiquidFiles is a secure, temporary storage space used for exchanging files with people inside and outside of the University.
How do I access LiquidFiles?
Go to LiquidFiles.wvu.edu and select WVU Login. If prompted to log in, enter your WVU Login credentials. After logging in, you will see the Message screen. From this screen, you can:
Upload or select an existing file to share with one or more individuals.
Send a message to one or more individuals (via email) to provide access to the shared file.
Request upload of files to your account from anyone at any email address.
How much space do LiquidFiles accounts have?
LiquidFiles accounts hold up to 1GB.
What is the largest file size that can be uploaded?
The system can accept uploads up to the size of the space available in an account. If an account has no other items in it, a file of up to one gigabyte in size may be uploaded.
How many times can I download a file?
Recipients can download a file one time. To download the file again, the sender will need to resend the file.
How long does a file last in LiquidFiles?
Files uploaded to LiquidFiles are automatically deleted after 14 days.
How do I send a file to a group?
Users can create multiple groups to send files easily in LiquidFiles.
Click your email address in the top-right corner to open Account Settings.
Click Contacts.
In the Label field, type a name for a group.
In the Email field, add a comma-separated list of email addresses.
When finished creating your list, click Add Contact. You can now see the group you created and options to edit the label, email addresses, or remove the group.
Click Secure Messages then Compose to return to the Compose Message screen.
Begin typing the name of the group (label) and click it to add the group to the To: field. You can also add additional email addresses here manually.
Attach your file, add any relevant text, then click Send.
Can people outside of WVU send me files?
Yes. Use the Request File feature to ask external users to upload and share files through an emailed link instead of a LiquidFiles account.
Note: The emailed link is one time use only and will expire when the files have been delivered.
How does LiquidFiles secure my files?
View the LiquidFiles Security page for information about their encryption, firewalls and other security practices.
I have a large file to share. Which tool should I use?
LiquidFiles is the preferred tool for sending files that may contain protected data or sensitive data that must be secured. View the File Sharing Tools Comparison Chart for a comparison of other file-sharing tools.
Which WVU email address should I enter into the To field?
LiquidFiles uses the primary email address listed in MAP. If you're unsure of a recipient's email address, you can look up their email address in the WVU directory, Applaud (requires VPN, accessed through Portal), or by using the same format that your email address is shown in top right corner. If you send to the incorrect email address, the recipient will be able to access the file you've shared, but will have to follow the same steps as an external user.
I receive the error "Please enter a valid date" on the Message Expires field when I select a valid date. What should I do?
This is an intermittent issue with Chrome. If you need to select a different expiration date, try using a different browser. Otherwise, try refreshing the page and leaving the message expiration date as the default of two weeks.
Where can I find LiquidFiles support?
If you need assistance with LiquidFiles, submit a WVU IT request or contact the ITS Service Desk at 304-293-4444.
