Modern authentication is a secure way to sign in and access your Microsoft 365 account. The Microsoft 365 desktop client, web apps, and mobile apps use modern authentication and are recommended by ITS to ensure a secure connection.

Basic authentication is sometimes used by other apps to connect to your Microsoft 365 account, like mobile phone email apps, and is a less secure method to access data. ITS is disabling basic authentication on February 7, 2022. Microsoft will disable all basic authentication connections on October 1, 2022. Anyone who is not using Duo and is just using a username and password will be affected by this change.

For ITS users, basic authentication is disabled for all new connections.
