If you are locked out of a FileVault 2 encrypted Mac, you will need to use a recovery key.
How to boot an encrypted device with a recovery key:
Turn on the computer. You will encounter a pre-boot login screen.
Enter your password to unlock the encrypted drive.
If your password is not being entered when you type or you are having other difficulties entering the password, press and hold the power button until the computer shuts down. Then, press it again to start up in the Recovery OS.
If you cannot remember your password, click the question mark (?) icon.
A Recovery Key can be used to reset your password. Click the link under the Password field to begin the process.
Call the ITS Service Desk at 304-293-4444 to request a FileVault Recovery Key. You will need to provide the serial number of your computer. The serial number is usually on the bottom of the device. If you need help, go to Apple's Find the serial number of your Apple Product page and select your device's instructions.
Once you have obtained a Recovery Key, enter it and click the arrow button to the right.
The computer will begin the boot process.
Once it is fully booted, it will prompt to reset the password. This must be completed to continue the boot process.
