Back Button Browser Issue in Qualtrics

When the browser's back button will not display a previous screen of questions within a Qualtrics survey or form, you can follow the steps below to add a back button to the survey.

Problem

When you are responding to a Qualtrics survey with questions on multiple successive screens, the browser's back button seems as if it is not working properly and will not display a previous set of questions. Instead it will take you to a previous web page that you viewed before you started completing the form.

Solution

The browser is actually behaving as it should. A Qualtrics survey has only a single URL, regardless of how many blocks or page breaks are used to put questions on separate screens. The solution is to allow your respondents to return to a previous screen in the survey via a Back button within the survey.

Steps to add a back button to a Qualtrics survey

1. Log into Qualtrics and edit the survey.

2. Click on Survey Options.

3. Click on Responses from the list of choices on the left.

4. Toggle the Back Button to On to enable your respondents to move backwards through your survey.

5. Click on Publish if your survey is live to ensure the change is visible to future respondents.

Note: If you add branching or any element between blocks in the Survey Flow, the survey's Back button will not work properly. This warning does not apply to branching created with Display Logic or Skip Logic.
