The WVU Health System and the University are separate legal entities with separate identity and access management systems which govern and provision access to systems and services. Health System employees must have a shared account, dual appointment, or a sponsored account to access University resources like the new research administration system, WRAP. This is a requirement for liability, licensing, and information security policy purposes. The current system, WVU+kc, auto-provisions Health System employees using custom code; this is not possible with WRAP as it is a commercial system developed by Huron Research.

WRAP Access

Some Health System employees are shared users (decided upon by the Health System), have a dual appointment with the University (e.g., faculty who are paid by both the University and the Health System), or have an existing sponsored account with the University. These employees can log into WRAP using their existing WVU Login credentials.

Health System employees without a dual appointment or shared user account must request a sponsored account to access WRAP. Sponsored accounts are typically needed for users employed by:

  • System Medical Group (PRBN)

  • UHA

  • Community Physicians employee

To request a sponsored account, visit the Research Operations Systems page and select Request Access under WVU Research Administration Portal. Approval may take 3 to 5 days to complete.

Contact HSC_ResearchAdministration@hsc.wvu.edu for questions about access requests or to check the status of a submitted request.

Types of Research

  • University Research: Projects that are completed on behalf of the University and meet the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) definition of research.

  • Health System Research: Projects that are completed on Behalf of the Health System for a goal or purpose stated by the Health System and meet the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) definition of research.

  • Health System Projects that do not meet the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) definition of research. Projects such as Quality Improvement, Evidence Based Practice and Program Evaluations that are initiated by the Health System in support of a Health System goal or purpose. These projects do not require IRB review and should be submitted to the University for review. Use the Human Data Protection process for determination and to obtain a Letter of Determination.

    • Federal Definition of Research (DHHS): According to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), "research" is defined as "a systematic investigation, including research development, testing, and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge". This means that any activity intended to create new knowledge that can be applied broadly is considered research under HHS regulations.
