West Virginia University is committed to student success. With this in mind, students are placed into math and chemistry courses based on prerequisites or placement scores. Students may place by ACT Math score, SAT Math score, scores on the ALEKS Math Assessment, or successful completion of a pre-requisite course. Learn more at WVU Course Placement Charts.
What is ALEKS?
ALEKS is a powerful artificial-intelligence based assessment tool that uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn’t know to assist in course placement. The exam is approximately 35 questions in length. Calculators are provided on-screen within the exam, so students are not allowed access to any additional calculators, websites or other unapproved aids when taking the exam.
ALEKS reports its findings to the student, provides opportunity for improving knowledge and skills, and identifies an appropriate level for course placement.
Since math and chemistry courses are demanding, it is important for students to begin in the course most likely to lead to success. ALEKS is used at WVU for that purpose. After completing the initial assessment students who wish to improve their skills may do so by using ALEKS learning modules and then retest.
Who must take ALEKS?
Students with below 22 ACT Math/540 SAT Math are required to take the ALEKS Math Assessment prior to attending New Student Orientation, if they are interested in a major that requires College Algebra or a higher level course. A list of WVU math requirements by major is available at orientation.wvu.edu/exams.
Students with 22 ACT Math/540 SAT Math scores or higher may choose to take ALEKS to place higher than they do by ACT/SAT. You may well have taken ACT/SAT before completing your high school math coursework. Brushing up on weak spots via ALEKS before attending New Student Orientation may help increase your placement score, which can mean saving money and time, taking fewer math classes, and finishing college sooner.
How do I take ALEKS?
ALEKS assessments taken prior to New Student Orientation may be taken un-proctored, at home. However, students will be limited to placement a maximum of one level above their highest ACT/SAT math score via an un-proctored ALEKS score.
To take ALEKS from home, log in to ecampus.wvu.edu and click on the ALEKS link. You will need your Login username and password. If you have not claimed/activated your Login account, go to login.wvu.edu and click Claim Account. You will not be able to access ALEKS until you claim your account.
Proctored ALEKS assessments administered on WVU’s campus are required as follows:
Students who submit an ALEKS score that places them in a college math course more than one level above their highest ACT/SAT math score will be required to take ALEKS on campus at WVU prior to or during the New Student Orientation period, or during the course add/drop period of the first term of enrollment. The ALEKS score earned from the on-campus attempt will be the score that determines math placement. No exceptions.
Admitted WVU students who are not required to submit ACT/SAT scores (i.e. international students, some transfer students) are required to take ALEKS on-campus prior to or during New Student Orientation, or during the course add/drop period of the first term of enrollment.
Students who are not required to take ALEKS on-campus at New Student Orientation may choose to take ALEKS on-campus at New Student Orientation.
What will I need to take ALEKS on-campus?
You will need a photo ID (driver’s license, passport, military ID, school ID); your Login username and password; and a pencil or pen to work problems. Paper will be provided. Calculators are provided on-screen within the exam, and students are not allowed access to any additional calculators, websites, or other unapproved aids when taking the exam.
What if I have problems logging in?
To log into ALEKS, you must have activated/claimed your Login account. If you have not claimed your Login account, go to login.wvu.edu and click Claim Account.
If you claimed your Login account, but you cannot remember your Login password, go to login.wvu.edu and click Forgot Password.
If you are still unable to log into ALEKS or need assistance claiming your Login account, call the ITS Service Desk at 304-293-4444. You will need to provide your student ID number when you call.
