Fix a blank computer screen

For desktop computers:

  • Make sure the monitor is plugged in and turned on.

  • If the monitor is on a power strip, make sure the power strip is on. 

  • Try moving the monitor's plug to another plug on the power strip.

  • Restart the computer.

For laptop computers:

  • Press the FN (Function) and F8 keys simultaneously to make sure the laptop is not set to view from an external device like a projector or external monitor.

  • If you're using a docking station, restart the laptop and ensure it is properly docked.

  • Restart the computer.

  • Try pressing the FN (Function) and F7 keys simultaneously.

Fix a CD-ROM Drive

...

  • If nothing happens when you put a CD in your CD-ROM drive, eject the disc and then reinsert it. If this does not work, restart your computer.

  • If a CD is stuck in the CD-ROM drive, select Computer from the Start menu, right-click the CD-ROM drive and click Eject

Fix a computer mouse

The mouse is not responding.:

  • Check that the mouse is plugged in at the back of the computer.

  • Plug the mouse into a different port.

  • Shutdown the computer, plug in a different mouse, and restart the computer.

The mouse skips/jumps around:

  • Try cleaning the mouse ball or sensor.

  • Make sure the mouse pad is clean.

Fix a keyboard

The keyboard is not typing anything:

  • Check the keyboard plug at the back of the computer. Unplug the keyboard and plug it back in. 

  • Plug the keyboard into a different port. 

  • Restart the computer.

  • Shutdown the computer and try a different keyboard.

The keyboard has some faulty keys or is typing weird characters:

  • Check for any stuck keys. You may need to clean the keyboard.

  • Check for something laying on part of the keyboard (for example, a corner of a book).

  • Tap the Shift keys, Ctrl keys, and Alt keys several times (separately).

  • Restart the computer.

Fix a projector

...

If your computer or laptop is connected to an overhead projector, but the projector does not display what's on the computer screen, try the following:

  • Confirm the projector is turned on.

  • Confirm the projector and computer or laptop cables are securely plugged into the correct output and inputs.

  • Confirm the lens cover has been removed from the projector.

  • On the computer or laptop press the Fn and F8 keys to switch the output to the projector.

Fix sound or speaker issues

  • Make sure the speakers are securely plugged in and turned on.

  • If your computer has two sound cards, try plugging the speakers into the other sound card. 

  • Check the volume control on the computer. Be sure that the speakers have not been muted.
